The annual celebration of July 4th was held by honoring the grave of Newport, William Ellery, who signed the Declaration of Independence. President Frank Hale conducted the ceremony. Members of the DAR and direct descendants of William Ellery from Middletown, Rhode Island and California were in attendance.
After wreath was laid the Newport Artillery Company gave the customary musket salute.
After the grave side ceremony, at Washington Square many gathered for a patriotic concert by the Salve Regina University Band.
On the historic Colony House steps the Declaration of Independence was read by Commander Walter Whitney (below being introduced by President Frank Hale).
Ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute to the country by the Newport Artillery Company in front of Newport's Colony House. Hip Hip Hooray!
Always a joyous patriotic occasion, July 4th in Newport.
Note that on July 4th the Colony House is always open for visitors. A special opportunity to see one of artist Gilbert Stuart's paintings of George Washington.
